About the format
A .p7m file wraps the original document inside its digital signature, which is why a normal viewer can’t open it. Italy uses them for electronic invoices (FatturaPA, saved as .xml.p7m) and for official papers. Every extra signature adds another .p7m to the name. Technically it is an “enveloping” CAdES signature.
Questions people ask
How do I turn a .p7m into a PDF?
Open it here and download the document. If there’s a PDF inside, you get it exactly as it was signed. XML invoices and text files can be converted to PDF.
My .p7m looks like a block of random text. Will it work?
Yes. Some .p7m files are saved as text (base64). We spot that and decode it for you.
Does my file get sent anywhere?
No. Everything happens inside your browser, so the invoice or contract stays on your computer or phone.
Is the PDF I download still signed?
Not by itself. The signature belongs to the .p7m file, and the PDF is the document that was inside it. Keep the original .p7m if you may have to prove who signed. The “PDF with signature report” download adds a page that records who signed, when, and what the check found.
What does “Certificate not recognized” mean?
It’s about who issued the certificate, not about the document. The certificate doesn’t come from an authority on the EU trusted lists or the ICP-Brasil list, which are the ones we check. That happens with company, test or very old certificates. Whether the document changed after signing is shown on its own line, just above.
What if the file has more than one signature?
Each signature gets its own card with the signer’s name, the signing time and the result of its own check.
